General

FunctionBay GmbH is a professional distributor of Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) simulation software for the simulation of both flexible and rigid body dynamics.

RecurDyn is an engineering software technology to analyze the dynamic behavior of systems which include both rigid bodies and flexible bodies. It combines MBD (Multi-Body Dynamics) to analyze the motion of rigid bodies and FEM (Finite Element Method) to analyze the motion, stresses, and deformation of flexible bodies.RecurDyn’s solver combines these two components in a single solver. This provides RecurDyn with a much faster and much more robust solver than it could be achieved through co-simulation.

CAD stands for computer aided design. CAD is the use of computer systems to aid in the creation, modification, analysis, or optimization of a design. CAD software is used to increase the productivity of the designer, improve the quality of design, improve communications through documentation, and to create a database for manufacturing. CAD output is often in the form of electronic files for print, machining, or other manufacturing operations.
RecurDyn supports several kinds of CAD file types. The following CAD files can be imported:
- Catia Files (.CATPart, .CATProduct)
- Parasolid Files (Text or Binary Files)
- Stereolithography Data Files (.stl)
- STEP (AP203, AP214, Catia and Pro/E) Files
- IGES Lines and Arcs - Useful for Media Transport 2D (RecurDyn/MTT2D) path definition.
- ACIS Files (.sat)
Imported CAD files can be connected with contacts, forces, joints etc. to simulate the multi body dynamics between the objects.

Computer-aided engineering (CAE) is the broad usage of computer software to aid in engineering analysis tasks.
It includes finite element analysis (FEA), computational fluid dynamics (CFD), multibody dynamics (MBD), and optimization.
Software tools that have been developed to support these activities are considered CAE tools. RecurDyn is such a Software.
CAE tools are being used, for example, to analyze the robustness and performance of components and assemblies. The term encompasses simulation, validation, and optimization of products and manufacturing tools. CAE systems are the major providers of information to help support design teams in decision making.
Major CAE softwares like RecurDyn are used in many fields such as automotive, aviation, space, and shipbuilding industries.

The finite element method (FEM) is a numerical method for solving problems of engineering and mathematical physics. It is also referred to as finite element analysis (FEA).
Typical problem areas of interest include structural analysis, heat transfer, fluid flow, mass transport, and electromagnetic potential.
The analytical solution of these problems generally require the solution to boundary value problems for partial differential equations. The finite element method formulation of the problem results in a system of algebraic equations. The method yields approximate values of the unknowns at discrete number of points over the domain.[1] To solve the problem, it subdivides a large problem into smaller, simpler parts that are called finite elements. The simple equations that model these finite elements are then assembled into a larger system of equations that models the entire problem. FEM then uses variational methods from the calculus of variations to approximate a solution by minimizing an associated error function.
RecurDyn opens access between finite elements and multi body dynamics. The Multi-Flexible-Body-Dynamics-Technology (MFBD) integrates mbd and fea (Finite-Elemente-Analysis) completely in one program.
Tension and stress analysis, contact calculations and big deformations with flexible bodys in one overall view are a daily business rather than a meticulous exception.

In the simplest terms, Multibody Dynamics (MBD) is the prediction of the motion of groups of interconnected bodies that have forces acting on them. The result of a multibody dynamics simulation is the motion of the bodies and the various interaction forces acting on and between the bodies. Multibody dynamics, as opposed to Multi-Flexible-Body Dynamics (MFBD), is the simulation of groups of bodies idealized as being perfectly rigid.
Multibody dynamics simulation software predicts the motion and the interaction forces by automatically formulating differential equations to describe the motion of a system of bodies and then solving them numerically.
RecurDyn is the world's leading multibody dynamics simulation software. It provides the most robust, easiest to use, and most complete solution for multibody dynamics simulation. It provides the fastest solver and the most extensive set of features of any multibody dynamics software. RecurDyn contains the most advanced technologies commercially available in a multibody dynamics simulation solution. RecurDyn provides its robust and rapid solution through our cutting-edge technologies and advanced software engineering skill.
There are many aspects of formulating the equations and solving them that are highly complex and provide challenges for most of our competitors. Through our advanced technologies, we can provide a stable, reliable solution for any of your multibody dynamics simulation needs.
Multibody Dynamics Technologies in RecurDyn: Advanced numerical methods.
The RecurDyn solver contains a collection of cutting-edge, world leading numerical methods that help it achieve its incredible performance.

MFBD (Multi Flexible Body Dynamics) in RecurDyn is a technology to analyze the dynamic behavior of systems which include both rigid bodies and flexible bodies.
Two flexible body formulations are supported in MFBD in RecurDyn. One is the method of modal synthesis, in which the deformation of a body is represented by a set of linear mode shapes obtained from an eigen analysis of the flexible body. The other is the nodal method, in which all nodal degrees of freedom are considered. The nodal method supports both nonlinear geometric deformation as well as nonlinear material formulations, such as plastic and large-strain rubber-like hyperelastic materials.
RecurDyn's powerful analysis environment combines both the modal and the nodal methods into the same solver, giving RecurDyn an incredibly robust, fast, and reliable solver.
Furthermore, flexible body meshes can be either imported from externally created FE meshes, or the meshes can be conveniently created directly inside of RecurDyn using its built-in mesh engine. RecurDyn is the first multibody dynamics analysis code to incorporate a mesher, allowing the user great flexibility and convenience in MFBD modeling and analysis.
More about MultiFlexibleBody Dynamics

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is a branch of fluid mechanics that uses numerical analysis and data structures to solve and analyze problems that involve fluid flows.
Computers are used to perform the calculations required to simulate the interaction of liquids and gases with surfaces defined by boundary conditions.
With ParticleWorks RecurDyn offers the ability to analyze MFBD systems that interact with either granular (dry) particles or particle-based fluids.
Granular solids, such as soil, sand or printer toner are modeled using RecurDyn/Particles which is based on the discrete element method (DEM). Fluid dynamics is available through co-simulation with the MPS-based CFD software of ParticleWorks. RecurDyn has an interface for ParticleWorks that makes co-simulation easy.
